Latifah's Wedding: Presents Fit for a Queen

Veronica Chambers

This week California lifted its ban on gay marriage, and rumor is that Queen Latifah is planning to wed her longtime partner. I haven't gotten my wedding invitation yet :^) but I have been mulling over gift ideas.  From "U.N.I.T.Y". to "Livin' Single" to her Academy-Award nominated turn in "Chicago," Latifah has given the world so much. Which makes me wonder, what kind of wedding present would befit America's favorite queen?

If money were no object, I'd get Latifah this silver pitcher. I love that it's so elegant, but the bamboo handle gives it an organic twist. I received a beautiful glass pitcher from Tiffany's on my wedding day and while at first I was nervous to use  it, in the end I used it constantly; to serve drinks from cucumber lemonade to sangria.

I love monogrammed towels. My own set has the initials of me and my husband, but I like the cheekiness of these Hers and Hers towels.

Finally, I am enamored of this Audrey lamp from Shine Home. It's girly, but not overly so and Latifah would dig, I think, the chocolate hand-blown glass. I'd include an excerpt from one of my favorite poems, "Effort at Speech Between Two People" by Muriel Rukeyser, which includes a line about "lamps in evening corners."  The poem also says, "I love you. Grow to know me... Take my hand. Speak to me."

Your turn. What do you think of Latifah getting married? Did you receive any truly special presents on your big day? Is there a present you love to give a newly married couple?

I admire your taste and think your gift ideas are beautiful and thoughtful and would be loved by her.  i wish i were getting married and was on your friencship list.  I did read a while back though that Latifah had disavowed that rumor strongly.

I am delighted that Queen Latifah has come out and announced that she will marry her partner.  I love her movies, I love her music and I love her strength.  I would give them a gift of a crystal glass vase--perhaps crystal from Slovakia....something fragile and beautiful.

Um...last I heard, Latifah is merely "rumored" to be getting married.  She is still officially "straight".  While I'm enthused at the support of our community of our suspected sapphic sister, please Ladies and Gents remember the time honored tradition of "letting a person come out of the closet in their own damn time."

Last official word from our Jenny Craig spokeswoman is she is only accompanied by her TRAINER around the world, not "girlfriend."

Let her do her thing, her way.  When she figures out the water's fine, she'll jump in.

I think it'd be impossible to get her the perfect gift, shes too amazing a person and I would feel like I was giving her a piece of tin no matter what it was. But hey thats how most would feel giving a present to one of their heroes!

Don't encourage any gay/fargot business on this site. It is an abomination to God and as black people we should not encourage this in any way.

Dear Zumbie,

Get over yourself and jump into the 21st century.

Your holy book also says DO NOT JUDGE.

Did you skip that passage?

Please.
