No More Mayhem and Foolishness: The Spring Cleaning Clutter Challenge

Veronica Chambers

You are officially invited to the Spring Cleaning Clutter Challenge. The end date is June 21st, the first day of summer. As I mentioned before I've got a situation going on in my house and I don't want Niecy Nash and the Clean House crew to show up on my doorstep, looking for my mayhem and foolishness.

I'm going to break down the challenge into manageable bits so hopefully we can all get to the clean house finish line together.

Every Tuesday, I'll be posting -- and looking to hear from you about how it's going for you.

Inspired by Root reader, "ladeeda,"  this week, I'm going to work on getting rid of five things every day.  I'm going to toss it, give it away and only if I really love it, keep it (and find a place to keep it.)

I'm starting with my closet (which has spilled over and all through my bedroom), then I'm moving onto my bathroom and home office.

Next week, I'll report on what I managed to get rid of and I'll hope you'll post your comments.  What did you get rid of?  Did you give anything away to good cause?  Did getting rid of even five items make you feel good?

This past winter, I met with Melani Lewandowski, a feng shui expert who said that clearing clutter is more than merely housework.  The Chinese philosophy of feng shui, or harmonious placement, states that junk begets junk and that by clearing out what you no longer need or love, you make room for more of the good stuff in life.

One of the things that was really striking in my conversation with Melani is how she spoke of the fact that you can honor that something has entered your life -- a vase, for example, given to you by a dear friend but one that is not at all your style, then you can let it go.  You can release the vase/table/blanket that doesn't bring you joy and make room for something that will.

Clutter often symbolizes big changes -- big changes that have already occurred and sometimes ones that we're stalling on.  So I'm curious. What's going on in your life that makes clutter such an imperative right now?  And if you dare, what -- or who -- caused the situation in the first place?

As anybody who's watched the show, Clean House, knows, it's never really about the stuff outside.  It's about the stuff going on inside.

I'll show you mine if you show me yours.

Big changes... how does 2 children and a new husband sound as change!? So, I've been home for the kids and they are at that toddler age where every toy has been coughed up onto the floor and abandoned with a fervor for the next object of desire. So two things happened this weekend. I have a rule know of 1 thing goes out for each thing a that comes in. I'm hoping this works! Also, due to small house syndrome, the clutter that exists is magnified 10x. I made a daily pledge to have an "uninterrupted vista" when I look at my floor at the end of the day, in preparation for the morning rush the next day. And I found that when we're going to pick something up to put it on the table, it's only a few steps away from where it belongs anyway! Here's to crossing my fingers! Something has to tame this beast. We are the products of our environment...psychologically speaking...and if I can conquer this...who knows what's possible, right?

Love your clarity, Ms. Clarity. I like the something in, something out rule.  And the uninterrupted vista for the new day also sounds wonderful.  You make a great point too, that often when we put something to the side, it's usually only a few steps away from where it belongs.

My problem is that not everything in my house has a place... at least not yet!

Good luck with the challenge and keep passing on tips!

Oh yes, I am all about spring cleaning these days.  My doctor required me to stay at home.  No more travel for a few months.  So I am alone with my basement and closets.  I have had no mercy Veronica!  I cleaned my basement with ruthless abandon.  You can't believe how great it looks.  I took two truck loads of clothes and shoes from both my daughter and me to my local charity.  I feel light as air and happy as can be.

I just moved and couldn't believe how much I've accumulated. Obscene, really. So I'm going to join the challenge. I realize how few of my son's toys are in use; he actually seems happier when there are fewer for him to play with--he goes outside more and plays more happily with the simple things. I'm donating some of his plastic toys and bringing out the wooden ones--as well as the toys he has never really jived with. Also moving along all of the beauty products I keep buying (my weakness). If I haven't used them in the last six months, they're in the trash. Will keep you posted. Good luck everyone!

After two weeks of getting on the men in my house to reduce, reuse and recycle I gathered a fairly nice selection of items to put in our neighborhood yard sale.  My eight year old and I tagged everything last night and plotted out how we were going to organize our tables.  I even went to the bank to get change and was ready for my first customer.  Imagine my dismay when I woke up this morning to rain, rain and more rain.  My fantasy of the clutter-reducing and income-generating yard sale is post poned until next Saturday.  I guess I get another week of going through the house gathering up stuff that we haven't used in years.  It's all being stored in my guest bedroom right now, so it will be nice to have that room back and to have some room to breathe.  How the heck can a family of three accumulate so much stuff.  Don't even get me started on the treasure chest of goodies I gathered up from my son's room.  This dude had toys and clothes with price tags still on them.  Would it be rude to ask family and friends to put some money on his 529 plan instead of sending the latest Playstation game?  Yikes
