The Real Housewives of Reality TV

izraelj

Word around the campfire is that there is a reality show called Real Housewives of Atlanta in the offing, maybe to get to air before the end of the summer, and I can’t wait. I’m a big fan of Bravo’s Real Housewives of…  series. It reminds me of classic Three's Company insofar as the premise, no matter what it purports to be, is actually a set-up for a smutty, more obvious aim, in this case, what I call "MILF TV": television that showcases attractive, middle-aged women in their natural habitat, often in clothing two sizes two small and barely covering them. Housewives is cast so that women can see a "real life" soap opera and men can follow any woman that meets thier peculiar taste: thin, thick, natural or done-over. It must be gratifying in some way for ladies everywhere that the tide has turned, and now society can appreciate the genteel--albeit it too often reconstructed--beauty of a older woman. This, I think, primarily due to the fact that our mothers and grandmothers weren't bombarded with images of "beauty," and there weren't many Bally's of Fitworks gyms back in the day. The ladies, by and large, are holding themselves together. Most of my boys have gone to pot, and relatively, I'm not doing too bad. Just need a Sit-Up Nazi in my life. Seriously.

But I digress.

I used to see the series as disgusting and exploitive but after enjoying the Real Housewives of New York and Real Housewives of Orange County fror a few seasons, I see it more as a tribute to older women, personal trainers and plastic surgeons everywhere, as well as a triumph of product placement and subliminal marketing. A few of the women are pulled too tightly but overall, they look GREAT. The storylines feel only slightly more contrived than on other “reality” shows, with their garish lifestyles amped up. I used to remark to friends about why we haven’t seen a Housewives with women of color, and now, like magic, I talked it up. Yeah, I know they had Jo De La Rosa in Real Housewives of Orange County, but I’m under the impression she’s passing, Cameron Diaz-stylee.

It seems strange that they went out of their way to find a white single mom to rep in the new Chocolate Mecca—they seem to be going through pains to integrate the cast in a way they haven’t done in the past. Also, the cast is filled out with two members of Team Big Girl. I'm a big fan of interracial dating and TBG, but most of middle America is not, so I don’t know what’s up with either of those casting choices. As a rule, I don’t think Housewives offer any real look into these women’s lives, but just offer them up as good entertainment. Troubling, that these shows don’t really deal with self-made women, just rich housewives and single women on the make for a meal-ticket. I wonder, do shows like these set some women back and make them look like superficial gold-diggers? I vote "yes." But my DVR will have a regular appointment on Bravo. Believe that.

Ok - so normally I may not admit to watching these shows but since you brought it up, here goes. Real Housewives of OC was/is my guilty pleasure but I couldn't really get into the ladies on NY. While I am happy to see they're going to have some women of color for the next season/location, I've seen a few previews and I find myself sliently saying what I always say when "we" are on "reality" TV - please don't embarrass me. Given the nature of the show, I'm sure there will be some foolishness but I hope its not too over the top. I'll be watching. And regarding your comment about none of the women being self made - two of the ladies on the OC show were very successful in their own right. Vicky - had her own insurance business and Gina was a realtor dealing in high end real estate. OK enough. Dang you for even getting me to admit watching it!

I loved the OC housewives because they actually tried to work. The New York housewives were too bitchy and had no real redeeming qualities. Bravo couldn't get any legit Atlanta housewives to do the show so they took second best: gold digging, back stabbing, suped up skanks who literally hit the marriage lottery. I hate the previews and don't even want to watch the show. Case in point: all one Atlanta housewife talks about is her impending divorce and how she wants an even better lifestyle than during the marriage, her entourage and why everybody should kiss her ass. The show sucks, she sucks and I want a do-over.

I am not fond of reality shows, period!! And as a fifth generation native of Atlanta, this show sounds like a pitiful showcase of transplants to the city who do not do anything for my beloved hometown.  In the words of most Atlanta natives that I know, "We wish most of you would go back where you came from."

I caught up with the Real Housewives of OC in 2007 and blogged about them a few times for a university publication.   I was hooked to the "Poor woman in a townhouse with jailbait son marries rich guy story line."  I forgot her name, but she is botoxed out, married to a guy name George and now really wealthy.

Also, a few of the Real Housewives of OC were self-made.  The real estate woman has a do for nothing husband who will probably try to get alimony from her, and  Vicki, she is a money mogul, but I am not sure it is because her husand earns six dig's/year.

I did not care for the wives of NYC. They were entirely too reflective of their cold northern environment.  And their raucous accents, blech.

I would like to see AA's Housewives of PG County, MD.  And perhaps star in it.  Ha ha.  But until then, I will also look forward to the Atlanta Housewives.

I CAN'T WAIT!!

Black folks trip me out! First we complain when there aren't shows that reflect how black folks live and are just like everybody else. Then we complain when we are on shows that reflect how black folks live. I JUST DON'T GET IT! Do we ever stop complaining? Will we ever stop pulling ourselves down and support each other? I don't like this...and...I don't like that. Good Lord!

If there are black women involved, it is guranteed that the show will be steered toward racial degradation, just like every other reality TV show that involves black people.

Miles Ellison, you need to come back on and explain yourself.  Your comment can be taken two distinctly different ways.

I guess people are beginning to notice that the older, mature women today are HOT!. Haven't you noticed that all the young women everyone are touting about all look the same? Same body, same hair, make-up, clothes, etc. The over-Forty set is looking out of this world! Women shouldn't worry so much about lines on their faces; like grey hair at a man's temples, they show character and a knowingness of life. Give me a cougar any day over a cardboard, cookie-cutter pop tart!

The networks that produce shows like this have a vested interest in negative racial stereotypes.  Portraying black women in any kind of positive, non-embarassing light is the last thing that the creators of any reality show want.
