Hillary Clinton and the "Chick Pass"

izraelj

Sen. Hillary Clinton should realize that while people certainly notice she’s a woman, Clinton gets more benefits from her gender than not, as her supporters would have you beleive. Early in the race, when it came to light that she was “mis-remembering” details of a diplomatic trip abroad, she got rode awhile, but the media was relatively quick to forgive her.  Now she’s  flippantly drawing an ugly line from the Robert Kennedy assassination to fellow Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s race for the White House, Yeah, of course she’s been be called out, but the outrage won’t last. She isn’t required to answer for people that say stuff in churches where she used to worship, not like Obama is. Women have something men don’t have: the Chick Pass: The ability (ne’ responsibility) to do/say crazy stuff and be forgiven.  And even Obama has given Clinton the Chick Pass. We are quicker to forgive women than men who say something we perceive to be ill-timed, off-color or just plain wrong. Sexist? Probably. But it's a fact of life.

Think about how outrageous women can be—especially older women—at family functions. They get to spill all the tea on everyone with impunity. Men get shut down or kicked out for the same type of behavior. Woman are allowed to be erratic, emotionally charged and unreasoned, and when/if she apologizes, people will chalk her talk up as a “woman’s way.” Dad or grandpa couldn’t get away with that. If Obama implied he was waiting for anyone to be killed, he’d be immediately charged with issuing a terrorist threat and thrown in jail. So would you or I. Clinton gets the Chick Pass.

People hardly remember Clinton’s deficient recall but we can’t seem to forget Sen. John McCain’s “Bomb-bomb I-ran,” Dan Quayle’s misspelling, or Howard Dean’s “I Have a Scream” gaffe. Men can’t show emotions, and are weakened by any display that betrays a placid, hardened façade.  Women have the luxury of changing their minds. Men in our patriarchal society, men only have their word, and the weight we impart to the honor and integrity of those words. Some would say she gets Chick Points for even running, because as a recently released study indicates, women aren’t particularly interested in running for elected office.

It’s true that people are saying lewd things about Clinton, her body, her cackle and her demeanor.  Calling for her to go home and iron shirts. Politics has been a boy’s game up to this point for good or ill, and these are the rules of the playground. Hopefully, she’s changed the game.

She’s taken a hit or two, but the Chick Pass has still done well for her.

I guess.......  damn, but don't you think we deserve several passes.  For goodness sake, we bleed every month (that's a disability).  We also create and nourish human beings with our own bodies (at no charge).  Not to mention we're the mules of the world and only own 1/10 of world wealth.  I think you need to chat with your momma.

are you frakkin' kidding me? this has to be the stupidest thing i've read on this site. clinton gets a chick pass? just the phrase "chick pass" is insulting and patronizing. we're quicker to forgive women? what alternate reality do you live in? 'cause i live in a reality that idealizes thin-hipped big-breasted girl-women, as long as they keep their mouths shut, and once they start talking, their normal-looking if close to paunchy husbands/boyfriends cut them loose for a younger model. i'm in the reality where a man gets more "interesting" looking as he ages but a woman over 40 is called a hag. i'm in a reality where a woman dating a younger man gets the ridiculous moniker of "cougar," with all that implies, but a man dating a younger woman is considered too normal to be a movement or get a name. and by the way, clinton hasn't been reamed into the ground for tearing up in new hampshire? i think you're the one with memory problems. what a ridiculous piece of writing.

"some would say she gets chick points for even running"

Are you serious? Who would you say is awarding these points and what do they amount to because I would like to put in my application and cash in my points for air mileage or maybe shoes - which no doubt people of this school of thought might think I would be more interested in as a woman. This is  an incredibly sexist viewpoint to be taking. It sounds a lot like what Ferraro said of Obama and aligns you with that sort of ignorance.

Wasn't that what Geraldine Ferraro said?  That Clinton got chick points?   "If Obama was a woman of any color he would be lucky" -- or rather, Hillary, as "a woman of any color" is lucky because she gets chick points.

I remember my mama going on about how a woman (any woman) in the White House was going to be so different  (and better) than a man back when Ferraro was a candidate.  Something about a woman's genes being superior, I figure.

You have shown a lot of ignorance in your posts on this usually fantastic site, but this one takes the cake. I'll leave the bulk of intellectual take down you need to Melissa Harris-Lacewell, since she'll be able to do it better and with more space, but just to begin -- your evidence is what? Some unverified claims about your own family reunions? What about the crazy stuff 'dad' and 'grandpa' say about their wives and daughters, like that they're insane and irrational whenever they exhibit legitimate logical and emoptional responses? They obviously don't get called on that.

No, Hilary hasn't been taken to task for her church background as Obama has, which is an example of racism. But her comments about the process and economic policy have actually been attributed to irrationality MUCH MORE than Obama's, because of the stereotype of 'hysterical women' we like to keep around thanks to chauvnists like you. Her comments about assassination were a huge deal, and they're only dying down because it's clear she's going to lose soon. I'm not voting for Hilary, but I recognize her mental and political prowess, and anyone who thinks she's getting a "chick pass" hasn't been paying attention to the polls, and has more insecurities than I can hope to address.

It's just my opinion, Hannah, buttressed with some studies.

jesus. don't taze me, bro. Err, sis.

I'm sure glad you don't come off as angry and irrational.

now comparing Hillary to my grandmother during a family dinner is ridiculous! just to think what she already acomlished- a white woman against a black candidate...wow. The queation is, do we want to wait and give Obama the training that he needs, let's say another term (he admitted himself to not having enought experience) or do we let Hillary take the job and get right to it(everybody knows that she already served two terms as a "president" during the 90's) ?

Please you have got to be out of your mind, to think that Hillary would be a better president then Barack. Same old boys-girls politics. She gets no chick pass here. I am outraged that people(men, women, others) would have the audacity to give her a pass to say what she wants to say. Have her redfaced husband(who only tanned to impress the sisters) then again, maybe it's from the embarassing remarks he has made to the media and anyone that would listen during this joke of a campiagn. Yes Barack has some learning to do, but this country has more learning to do as well. He is as ready as the 44 president's before him, and we all know the Bush is still a president in training on his way out off of Pennsylvania Avenue in  a few months. I hope that someone has the guts to go back to New York and run for her seat in the senate as well. But enough about her, let's support Barack and bring our country and troops back to our shores to start taking care of our needs and those of the families that stood by our patriots that served this country inspite of the Washington intellectuals that got us into this mess in the first place.

haha the chick pass thats a funny term ( a bit high school) ...what about the dude pass, men have their advantages too.

I think she has too many cooks and its spoiling the broth, one day she is sweet and the next day she is all righteous with something Obama did. She should be more consistent get rid off those extra opinions her party has to say ...she isn't focused instead she is all over the map. Besides Obama is my vote (if i was American)

and i have to say cperry has me laughing because its true us women deal with things such as...well ask your mom :D

"Chick pass"!?! It's not the Chick pass, it's the Clinton pass! However, I'll admit Obama's gotten a serious pass from the media on any sunstantial issues. He seems to be their annointed darling, and no one had dare better ever ask a serious question of The Black Candidate, lest one be considered a racist. Like Lucy, he's got some 'splainin' to do.

I would have to agree, it is the "CLINTON PASS". AS far as mis-remembering.. I spent a year in Iraq, being shot at on convoys, and my camp being attacked at night,  AND I AM HERE TO TELL YOU, YOU NEVER NOT REMEMBER BEING SHOT AT!!! You dont mistake "reports of snipers"  with actually having bullets fly past your head.. In the news video , if you look close, none of the military guards on her trip had their weapons loaded.Wow!!!
