Lou Dobbs' inner Archie Bunker

izraelj

CNN commentator Lou Dobbs got caught out there making a nod to the old school when he referred to black leadership as “cotton-pickers.” Yeah, it would be easy to just take his remark as a general diss that kind of transcends racial lines, except that CNN clearly saw there was a problem, because they removed the term from the transcript of the show.

No one expects much more that this type of tripe from Dobbs—he’s anti-everything that has to do with people of color, and obviously has got issues. But his slip helps you remember that this presidential race is unprecedented in so many ways, and it has forever changed the language of politics. But some things—like talking-head types loosing their inner-Archie Bunker on national television—will never change. And I think we could just be at the beginning of a new, prime-time racism revival in this country where anything goes.

Alas, even Archie Bunker got kissed by a Black man on TV; <sigh> maybe there is still hope.....? but, I sometimes think it is hilarious when people are betrayed by their own unconscious biases in a very public way.

Mr. Izrael, I would love to hear your comments about Rachel Ray's Dunkin' Donuts ad being pulled if you have the time...

I thought he got as far as "cotton ...".   Do you have a better recording?

Lucky for him he didn't try to say "wooly-minded" and get as far as "wooly ..." or folks without good hair would have been on him as a "hairist".

It was cute seeing him react like a whupped white man.  Y'all got h meddia runnign scared.  Good to see!

My daddy used to say things like "what in Sam Hell" and "cotton-pickin'".

When I hear it, I always think of it of it as a cute 1950's throwback for white men of that era who don't say things like "beyotch", "ho" and "my n*ggah" in casual conversation (let alone on TV!).

Could y'all maybe publish the new word list for whupped white boy politicians and media folks so they can avoid all the naughty words?  It does seem like the list has expanded a bit .. at least for white folks, anyway.  I ask myself "What Would Obama do?" and feel sure he would at least give white folks the new list.

Sorry dq2, I don't think Dobbs is suffering from "self-hate" unless you want to include Cesar Chavez as a "self-hater."  Cesar fought illegal immigration for his entire life, seeing it for what it was: a way for farmers to drive down the wages for Mexican-Americans by importing illegals by the thousand.

Since Dobb's kinfolk are not competing for illegal alien jobs like Cesar Chavez and black folks are, it would seem that if Dobbs is a self-hater at all, it would be because cutting of immigration is going to make  his own sammitches, yard work, construction and house-cleaning MORE expensive by keeping out Mexicans who work cheaper than Mexican-Americans and the brothers and sisters out there.

As Booker T. Washington said to American employers a century ago, and as Lou Dobbs echos today: "throw down your bucket " right here in America and hire American workers, particularly the black folks who have built this country.

Of course, if the cotton-picking black intelligentsia with their two or three college degrees and their high-yella office jobs figure the black working class doesn't need those jobs anymore andd wants to give them away to illegals ... well ... I guess they'll just have to wait another generation or two for another Booker T. or WEB Du Bois.

As a white man of my acquaintance explained to me recently, "high school educated white men have been losing wages since before 1972.  Don't expect me to have any sympathy for black folks if the black intelligentsia keep working to replace both of us with cheaper Mexicans. If they are so damn interested in filing America up with tens of millions of peasants, let THEM give up THEIR jobs for them."

I'm a black man and I would like to know under what context did Lou use this so-called slap at undocumented workers or blacks? I agree with big bill. We're falling apart from the insides and not along racial lines. We're letting big businesses divide and conquer us while using undocumented workers to destroy our middle and working class. They and the businesses that employe them are not paying Social Security taxes or health care premiums. They do nothing in helping blacks and other minoirity groups fight racism. look at wages and how far they have fallen. You don't see many black or white americans on construction jobs anymore. Because the undocumented workers will work for a third of the wages. It has nothing to do with globalization, when its work being created here. They're coming here illeagally and working our jobs. If business can't make a profit and stay in business without the use of illeagally, then they should not be in business. Who said business had the right to be in business at the detriment of its own citizens?

yes people might seem to change or society might seem to change but its going to be awhile before those Archie's are weeded out ( maybe we can send them to a island when they retire)

I really hope i'm alive to see the day when people don't really know what a Archie Bunker or the term bigot means.

Mr. Dobbs is against illegal immigration and so should any thinking legal American of whatever race.  Who do you think pays for the hospital visits and other services that illegals consume?

So roger88008, I guess what you're saying is that an Illegal Immigrant shouldn't reap the benefits of the land they migrate to. I guess that would mean that everyone living in California, Texas, and the greater portion of the southwest should pack our bags, seeing as how we illegally immigrated there and then promptly stole the land from Mexico (also meaning all "illegal immigrants" from Mexico therein would be simply living on their own, rightful territory). Moreover, I guess we should all just move out of the United States, seeing as how we illegally immigrated here and essentially drove the native peoples out from their habitats. While we cannot just let people in willy-nilly, saying that those people have no right to come here is absolutely absurd.

Moreover, I find it a bit disconcerting that you suggest that one human being should not help another human being stay alive due to the fact that they aren't a "citizen" of an area in the world drawn by very old, very dead men. Countries, and furthermore, sovereignty, is a manufactured concept that is losing its edge due to international organizations and forms of open knowledge (aka the internet). However, this is not really the issue.

Mr. Izrael, I think you are certainly right about the seemingly immanent "racist revival". In my perfect world, things such as this (ex. Don Imus outbursts, Michael Richards exclamations, what have you) wouldn't offend anyone, they would simply be mocked and laughed at by the entire population, such as any ridiculous and outrageous and disrespectful idea or concept would be mocked on the internet (ie- http://www.failblog.org). While that will certainly never happen, I can at least dream of the day...
