Down from the Tower - John Edwards and Katrina [Melissa]

lacewellm

Marc,

I’ve got a question for you. With John Edwards out of the race, do you think anybody will remember New Orleans? I am so fed up with the Democrats in the aftermath of Katrina, and he was the one candidate who kept insisting that we remember.

Katrina captured everything the Democrats are supposed to be good at: environmental degradation, racial injustice, urban poverty and Southern exceptionalism. But Dems have done little more than exploit the political opening that Katrina provided.

After 9-11 anybody who criticized W. was labeled unpatriotic. But during Katrina reporters went ballistic about the slow government response.  CNN reporters were the best: Anderson Cooper got radicalized and Soledad O’Brien got racialized.  Suddenly it was OK to be critical of Bush.  Somehow the Democrats found the spine they were missing during the authorization of the Patriot Act and the Iraq resolutions.  They were finally ready to criticize Bush.

But they had almost nothing to say about the perfect storm of domestic issues implicated in Katrina. Instead, the story was somehow about Iraq. If Bush can’t get water to the Superdome he can’t be trusted to fight the war in Iraq. It was a winning strategy. The party walked to their anti-war victory in the 2006 midterms over the bodies of New Orleans’ dead. Nancy Pelosi brought to you by the televised images of Big Mama dead in her wheelchair outside the Superdome.

I am convinced it is because we don’t think of poor, black people as citizens.  Would it have been different if instead of calling them refugees, CNN had reported, “Oh my God, there are thousands of voters trapped on the roofs of their homes!”   At least John Edwards noticed. I am going to miss him.

I agree. I will miss Edwards as well. Maybe it would be possible WHEN Obama wins the democratic vote that he will offer VP to Edwards. What a beautiful team that would be.

Side note: I just posted your debate with Gloria Steinem on Democracy Now on my site iLoveUPeople.com and must take the opportunity to say how I wish there was poster of you available to place on the wall of my den. My girlfriend first hipped me to the debate and before then I hadn't heard or known of your work. Well I am certainly a fan (if you will) of you mind Prof. Lacewell. Since, I have had several conversations with friends about that debate. It was like watching a mentally stimulating boxing match (if that's possible). I found myself yahooing and praising the sky with your one two combination blows to 2nd wave feminism. Great job! This is just to further encourage you to continue writing, speaking and educating. You are a leader in bloom!

Marc,

First I do not think there is any change whether Obama comes, Hillary comes or any one from the down under or top over. The politicians are busy with the votes. They do not want to have any monetary burden with the new chair. As is, the US Dollar is gone down and the world is trying to look at the grim farce more with the Mr. Bush’s last speech. We all had enough of the WMD, Afghanistan, already tired soldiers in Iraq, Afghanistan, and UN not on the course. Kenya politicians do not want to listen. Mr. Bush does not like many things now. Iran is the biggest threat to him and Iran today let go one of the Missile into the space. It is possible that this can be may be used the way Iran wants this.

With the seasoned politicians like Mr. Bush. I would emphasise that he is really seasoned as he has upset the whole world. The new comers are very nervous to look at the Katrina left out issues. If they touch this, they will have to tackle the Enron, CIA leaks, the heroine that is not supposed to come into USA but still flourishing trade. Oh. It is dismal picture.
