HRC is out and so is Father Mike

melissa harrislacewell

Marc,

Jack White may have thought pigs were flying yesterday when Obama won the nomination, but I know for sure that I just saw one sail past me in the backyard.  I ran in to see what happened and that is when I read that Hillary has officially ended her bid for the Democratic nomination.  I was beginning to believe that nothing, not even losing, would be enough to persuade Hillary to exit.  But heck, if we can nominate a black man on the Democratic ticket, why not this too.

Unfortunately my personal news wire (the email inbox) was also heating up with another story.  Father Michael Pfleger, a winner of my John Brown Award for white men who are down with the cause,  has been suspended from his pulpit at St. Sabina after more than 30 years of service. The story reads:

Carnage from the Audacity to Speak

Father Michael L. Pfleger, one of the strongest supporters of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor Conference, Inc. and a 2009 Beautiful Are the Feet honoree, is now in the fight of his life for his thirty-three year ministry and his pastorate at The Faith Community of Saint Sabina.

Francis Cardinal George, Archdiocese of Chicago, has stripped Father Pfleger of his pastoral leadership and authority for an indeterminate length of time.  Father Pfleger, affectionately called Father Mike, has been one of the most prophetic voices and activist advocates for the poor, the marginalized, the disenfranchised and for African Americans in Chicago and throughout the nation.  The decision by the Cardinal, and the manner in which it is being implemented, reflect total disregard and disrespect for Father Mike and The Faith Community of St. Sabina.

Father Mike was stripped of all pastoral authority.  He cannot preside over a previously scheduled funeral and wedding this week and was informed that another priest, yet to be named, will perform both ceremonies. The funeral is one of a longtime member, and the wedding is that of a couple who had been estranged from the Catholic Church until invigorated by Father Mike's prophetic teachings and moved to join St. Sabina.

Father Mike was told mid-morning on Tuesday, June 3rd, that he was on administrative leave, effective immediately. He was ordered to vacate the premises by evening. He protested and was allowed to stay just one night. He had to find new accommodations by June 4th.  This order was given after the Cardinal first asked Father Mike to request a leave under the guise of "stress" because his father is dying.  While Father Mike is indeed dealing with his father's physical illness and journey, he declined to participate in this convenient charade.

A priest from a languishing nearby parish has been assigned as interim administrator despite qualified and experienced pastoral and lay leadership who are already in place at St. Sabina and have frequently functioned in Father Mike's absence.

This gross disregard for the welfare of Father Mike and The Faith Community of St. Sabina appears as one more sign that the agenda afoot is to silence, marginalize and vilify prophetic voices for justice in this nation.

The manner in which the Cardinal has acted, effectively rendering Father Mike homeless with less than 24-hour notice and sending in an interim administrator, is unwarranted and unprecedented.  The Cardinal has shown more tolerance and compassion for priests accused and convicted of pedophilia, than he has shown to Father Mike and the faithful parishioners of Saint Sabina.

A prayer vigil was held on the evening of June 3rd at the church. Please click here for a statement from the leadership of Saint Sabina for you.  We need a national response.  Please email or call the archdiocese and voice your concerns.

The Cardinal's email address is vocations@archchicago.org .  The phone number is (312) 751-8230.

Please hold The Faith Community of Saint Sabina and Father Mike in your prayers.  Feel free to stay in contact with us as we share this journey.

I am truly distressed about this development.  As far as I can tell Pfleger's comments during his visiting sermon at Trinity United Church of Christ pointed out the depth of HRC's sense of entitlement. He linked that entitlement to both her "white privilege" and her "wife privilege."   His delivery was irreverent but his analysis was keen.

I am happy to see Hillary gone, but I am  distressed to witness Father Mike's removal.

This will sound harsh but I'm a bit annoyed:

So priests can molest innocent children (allegedly) and get a slap on the wrist but MP speaks the truth and he's suspended? I guess the penalty for offending certain people is far greater than the loss of innocence for children.

It is disturbing that Rev. Pfleger would lose his position after he built such a strong ministry.  The man apologized for his comments.  I e-mail the cardinal as the story suggested.  Forgiveness is one the main tenets of the Christian faith.  If we expect God to forgive us of our sins we have to be forgiving of others.

I can't stand what Rev. Pfleger said, and I abhor the people watching and listening and laughing -- to me, his words and the response of the churchgoers were racist and sexist.

BUT. There's a huge difference between saying something awful -- which is a right in this country -- and molesting a child. Sadly, because we have Rev. Pfleger on tape with his words, he gets punished immediately. Because we haven't yet found tape of priests molesting children, those priests get every protection under the law. There is something very, very twisted here.

Listen I understand why Obama had to distance himself from the good father. But at the end of the day the black community needs to support the father, because he was speaking about a subject that is worthy of discussion and that is white privilege. The father is in the trenches everyday fighting for poor people and the disadvantage. He is not crazy. The fact is the majority of the black community still face racism and real discrimination. We can debate how to end it, but lets not act like the father is a racist or against white people. I mean lets not forget the father is white himself.

I disagree strongly with what Father Pfleger did (mocking a political candidate as a guest pastor in the pulpit of Trinity) and feel that his apology was a typical phony one ("if I offended anyone"). He needed to simply apologize to Clinton and to Trinity.

However, I agree with other comments here that the bishop is destroying him over this, where bishops were all sensitivity about much greater offences (like pedophilia).

Dear Cardinal,

I think it would be a travesty to remove Fr Mike from the parish. For simply saying things to his congregation that others do not like? Well, if you remember during the time of the Lord, He said a number of things that the powers that be did not like! He stood his ground and they crucified him. Are you going to repeat that in this day and age? I would hope not!

Fr mike is not a bad person because of these few lines that he spoke! albeit they are true! Why not look at the good he has done in the neighborhood and in the whole community for that matter? Or do we throw him off the bus because there are a few who were embarrassed by his statements? I say that whoever is free of sin, let him cast the first stone! I dare anyone to do that!

I can see the efficiency now as a total 180 degrees from when the kids were being molested by those monsters back in the day!

But again who am i to question the church and its hierarchy, who is excommunicating people for ordaining women as priests! In the 21st century!

Same here, And Father Mike's voice was prophetic; Obama won and Clinton did not concede, she talked tough as if she were "entitled" to something. I cringed when I herard Father Mike speak. But later I realized he was right.

Father Mike was right, he was simply noting Hillary's false sense of entitlement and how it may have been linked to the concept of White privlege. where you agree or not, that is not reason for this man to be removed after 30 years of great service to his church and the community. i am not Catholic but I'm sure that the church and the community around it will suffer without him there. Church is about the people in it too,

I have never really read this blog until the president of my Black Student Union sent me a link from it concerning the trial of the officers involved in the case of Sean Bell. I'm happy he did. Since then the heartfelft words of Melissa have definitely made me want to get even more involved in the programs organized by Fordham's BSU.

I decided to email the Cardinal because this saddens me so much. Though we are on the verge of having a black man enter the presidency, those who intend to reveal to the world the intense racism that is consistently swept under the rug in our country are silenced and punished. So here it is.

Dear Cardinal George,

I am a young college student attending Fordham University, the Jesuit University of New York. Though I have only studied at Fordham for one year, the Jesuit ideal of "men and women for others" has become a mantra of mine. It encouraged me to become involved in community service, a continuation of a habit started during my high school years studying at Merion Mercy Academy run by the Sisters of Mercy. This past year I spent my spring break in San Deigo with twelve other Fordham students working at Stand Up For Kids, an organization that rescues homeless and at-risk teens off the streets of San Diego.

Catholic Social Teaching is something that I truly believe in, though I am not Catholic. This is why the recent news of Father Michael L. Pfleger saddens me very much. A man who cared so much for poorest of the poor and the marginalized in today's society should be encouraged. With no one to speak up for those who are constantly trampled by institutions that deem them insignificant, the true meaning of Catholic Teaching is lost. "When did I see you poor, naked, and hungry?", we will ask the Lord. They were the people Father Pfleger dedicated his life to serving. Removing him from his parish is indeed a misstep by the Archdiocese of Chicago. I ask that you truly review your actions and ask yourself why the removal of Father Pfleger will help the Catholic Church as a whole.

When non-Catholics see the removal of a man who lived out the the true teachings of the word, it will be understood that those who live to help those who the world cares the least about are not valued by the church. Maybe the views of Father Pfleger scared some individuals. However, it has come time for those who see injustice to speak out against it. Keeping silent is an even worse sin than those committed against the poor. I ask that you bring back Father Pfleger to the parish of Saint Sabina. He is only doing what so many in our world are afraid to do - offer the poor a chance to live with dignity as we do.

Thank you for listening to what a concerned young college student from Philadelphia had to say.

Sincerely,

Johanne Sterling

Ministers are conducting themselves rudely, everywhere. At Riverside Church, NYC, I had an issue in which a person I tutored was stalking me, I reported it to the Minister of Education and they got rid of me. On top of that, they did not want me to volunteer in anything. I am certified to teach English and usually, only high schoolers elect to volunteer. I informed a former domestic violence survivor about it who is also a minister there, Pat Lawson, and she ignored the issue. The other female minister mailed me a pledge letter stating how much I had pledged to give but had not to date. I informed the senior minister and he is discouraged from apologizing because the other ministers do not want him, too. These people can say nothing but good about me: gave treasure, time, food to the food pantry, and attended regularly: However, good people are often stepped on to show power and ministers need to know that in a church, they are to at least act like a Christian but many fall extremely short.

I believe Father Pfleger will return to his parish.  I also believe his leave was required, for the good of the Obama campaign and because his homily at Trinity did not educate people about faith, about the gospel or about confronting spiritual crises.  That is what a homily is supposed to do.  While there is a kernel of truth in Father's analysis of white privilege, cruelty, sarcasm and mockery are not tools for Christian faith or understanding.  And I have been appalled by Hillary's statements against Obama, by the way.  The Christian way requires one to rise above it, as Obama continues to do.

This is shameful. Father Mike should have touched a boy instead of speaking honestly. e would still have a job. SMH
