The Attacks on Michelle Obama [Call]

Marc Lamont Hill

Melissa,

Before you do anything else, look at this photo.

Are you as mad as I am?

When I first saw this photo on the DailyKos, which has since taken it down, I was immediately disturbed by the violent imagery being used to depict Michelle Obama. Although the site was attempting to critique the recent onslaught of Republican attacks, I worry that the normalization of such images will have a dangerous impact on the public imagination. The last thing we need is the normalization of images depicting the abuse of black female bodies. Furthermore, I find it hard to believe that such tactics would be used against any of the other potential First Ladies. Can you imagine Bill O'Reilly talking about lynching Nancy Reagan?

In addition to the photo, I'm equally troubled by the increasing level of focus on Michelle Obama. From the questions about her patriotism to the conservative pundits' suggestion that she is "too negative," Michelle has been subjected to an unprecedented level of public scrutiny. While I agree that anyone who operates as a surrogate should be subjected to public critique, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the right wing media is obsessed with smearing, not challenging, Michelle Obama.

To be sure, Michelle Obama isn't the first undeserving victim of Republican attacks. After all, character assassination (along with voter suppression) is one of the two most common tactics within the Republican playbook. Still, the GOP's approach to Michelle is uniquely problematic, as it plays to vicious representations of Black women as emasculating, angry, and unworthy of protection. Further complicating this is the all-too-familiar Catch-22 faced by most black candidates. If the Obama campaign points out the racial dimensions of these attacks, they will be labeled as divisive race-card players. If they ignore them, the GOP will only intensify its onslaught.

What do you think, Melissa? Are you as bothered as I am about the photo? How should the Obama camp respond to these attacks? Also, why hasn't your boy Barack said more to shut this down?

Thanks Marc for highlighting the horrifying nature of the discussion about Michelle.  Why is the Daily Kos so flip about such a murderous image? Do African American women have "progressive" allies?

So far, the fallout (discussion) emanating from the HRC comments is SD today, have not addressed AA sensibilities at all ----- male or female. It's now 1747 hrs. (ET), 05/23/2008

Why the racist porn on a leftie site?  It should be socially unacceptable to so sexualize violence and hatred.  No matter the supposed context, this is a call to dehumanize.  I say this as a white male cognasant of my own social progremming concerning black folks -including such salacious imagry of women of color.

This is disgusting. We were taught to go to college, graduate, work hard and treat people right. Even when you do those things you are still treated like you really don't belong.

That's sad

The Right is counting on these appeals to racism...it's money in the bank to them. And frankly, unfortunately, I don't have much faith that they won't be 'rewarded ' for their 'faith' in the degree of racism which still exists in this country today... I'd love to be wrong about this but I guess we'll see won't we?

Are we surpised? This should have been expected, although it is by no means acceptable. But this is America, let's not forget.

I'm not surprised, or hurt. I have had so called colleagues send satirical parodies from some magazine.   The last story was about a black man in the parking lot begging for change.

It is ironic however that  everytime I am accosted by a beggar, he is white with a hard luck story.

Aneehow.

The black community really rushed out for Michelle Obama on this one, thus giving the photograph more attention than it really deserves.    As far as I'm concerned that picture proves one thing:  smart black women are very threatening to stupid people, regardless of race.

It's hard for anyone not to like Michelle Obama.

I like her more than I like her husband!!!!

"The last thing we need is the normalization of images depicting the abuse of black female bodies. "

Don't the videos for rap and hip hop already do that to some extent? I'm not minimizing the stupidity of the image above, but the image of black women as something less than an equal pretty much permeates video culture.

As for the image above, thank you for printing it. I hadn't seen it on DailyKos, but knowing that ANYONE would put together that image, for whatever reason, makes me sick as a woman.

I don't know exactly what to say about this picture. When I first saw it, the thought that entered my head was "What the hell!" I'm really upset. I mean, come on, why was this cartoon published. I get that it was made as a statement against racist white people. I do not think that women or african americans should be depicted in this form, and I do not think it should be an accepted form of mockery in entertainment. I do think that a stick should be pulled out of our facist country's back door, but this isn't the way to do it. Women in general have not fought for our rights, in order to be depicted like this, and african americans, I am sure do not like, after all these years of racism and fighting for equality, that one of the few positive figures in our country, is being used as a joke against the very people that give me hell every day for supporting a black president. Not to mention that this will give white people a chance to cry racism, and trust me, I come from a white town, and I know that people in my town will argue with me when I say this race should not be about Race! I don't know where I am going with this, but I think it should be the pricks is thier little white dresses, that are being tortured. Though I guess that would be as bad, would that make me as ignorant as the dumb-asses that made the toon in the first place?

A clarification -- this is not a photo. It is a doctored piece of propaganda.

I think we should be pragmatic about this depiction.  As you know, race is a visceral component of American politics and is often exploited by political factions.  To be outraged, I think, at the depiction is somewhat of an over-reaction.  Obama is running for the highest position in the world, and it is naive to think that the Obamas would skate through the election season without anyone, whether it be conservatives or liberals, viewing them through the lens of race.

Obviously this cartoon (why do you keep calling it a "photo"?) is offensive beyond description. But when Marc Lamong Hill writes, "The last thing we need is the normalization of images depicting the abuse of black female bodies" it makes me wonder if he ever turns on his TV and sees how women - black, white, Asian, Latina - are treated in a lot of hip hop videos, not to mention mainstream Hollywood movies and in commercials. A clearly offensive cartoon like this could never lead to "normalization" of inappropriate imagery as quickly as the images that are already out there and accpeted as "normal."

As a West Indian of mixed descent (veeerrry mixed!) I am always intrigued by the deisgnation of the terminology  American "blacks", or "African American", or Afro American. What degree/percentage of black blood classifies an American as black? If one parent is white and the other black, is the offspring black if the appearance is that of a white? If one is of mixed parentage, what is one's race in terms of classification - like completing a form?

I am really "mixed up"!

It's already ok to put every other race of female higher than a black female. I wouldn't be surprised if we got any more digs.

Good morning:

The hard and cruel treatment that Michelle Obama is receiving from several channels is not a surprise to me.  No!, this is not surprising to me.  As a black woman, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, journalist, author, and overall black woman myself, trying to survive to pay some bills, laugh a little, live a little and pray alot, no, this is not a surprise to me.  This very inhumane treatment of the photo of Mrs. Obama, is a sure sign that no matter how rich, how intelligent, how politically powerful, 'discrimination and racism' has not halted, and unfortunately, it appears as though it never will, not here.

Why is it now black men what to stand up for us?  How many sister get beat down by black men but you want to focus on Michelle Obama.  Let me tell you what I see in Mrs. Obama.  A strong black woman that should be able to speak for herself.  If they keep attacking show your above the fray and keep spreading your husbands message.  Through that young girls can have a positive role model.  Letting Barack come out and set everyone straight gives credence to the fact black women need a man to speak for them.  We don't need you to speak for us, we need you to start giving us the same respect you demand other people give us. Does the picture bother me, yes.  But so what?  It only has the power you give it.  Laugh it off because in the long run it's just a picture.  Words and actions mean more.
