The Sean Bell Tragedy: What Do We Do? [Call]

Marc Lamont Hill
Melissa,

As you know, the three officers involved in the murder of Sean Bell were acquitted of all charges on Friday.

When I first heard the news, I was so angry that I was unable to think of anything but retaliation. Where should we riot? What can we destroy? Who can we hurt? Like many people, I craved the sense of power, however ephemeral, that is produced by making our enemies hurt the way they’ve hurt us. Even now, as I make an unequivocal call for peace, a huge part of me wants to see somebody pay for this egregious miscarriage of justice.

The problem, however, is that reactionary violence doesn’t help. All the rioting and looting in the world will not return Sean Bell to his wife, child, parents, and friends. Destroying police cars will do nothing to stop the next detectives from seeing unarmed black bodies as a threat that warrants lethal force. Inflicting bodily harm on the three officer-assassins will not prevent the next judge from ignoring the evidence and ruling in favor of an arrogant, white supremacist, proto-fascist police state.

Although I understand what we shouldn’t do, I am at a loss about what we should do. This brings me to my questions for you, Melissa: How do heal from this latest tragedy? How do we achieve justice for Sean Bell and his family? How do we prevent the next senseless murder from happening? How do we fight back?

Tucker Carlson calls Jeremiah Wright a "Bafoon" on Morning Joe this morning (4/28).

I've got somewhat of a different take. I was saddened because this man lost his life, but cautious enough not to assume that any of these officers broke the law. Another take: http://sethandray.wordpress.com/2008/04/28/no-justice-no-piece-black-monday/

embarrassingly ordinary human beings, with absolutely no special qualifications whatsoever, wearing truly silly matching costumes, carrying guns and tasers and batons, threatening to beat the *** out of you, threatening to murder you, if you don't pay their masters, which masters will in turn then pay those same ridiculous and mediocre people playing dress-up to bully you into behaving as they themselves personally prefer--continuing to pay those thugs to continue doing what they do, keeping all of this going to keep themselves up and to keep you down.

this is "THE LAW." this is "LAW ENFORCEMENT." this is not "proto" anything. this is fascism. these are men who murdered a man. who under any other circumstances, decontextualized from social narratives, would be instantly revealed for precisely what they are--sociopathic killers supported by their sociopathic tribal leaders.

just another shameful day in america. only this time it got reported.

now what?

hold hands? shake one's head in tired grief?

this *** has to end.

Wow man, "decontextualized from social narratives"? Deep. Has it occurred to you that the purpose of communication is to communicate? If you go around using specialized code words like that, nobody outside your own circle of think-alikes will understand you? And since they don't understand you, they won't care what you have to say. And if they don't care what you say, then what you say simply doesn't matter?

panopticon7,

Nice to see you put down all the brave women that put on a police officer uniform and risk their lives to protect all of us from crime, help us when we are injured, or keep our roads safe from those who care to over indulge in alcohol. The three officers were acquitted because the prosecution failed to bring a criminal case against them. Your outrage should be at the prosecution not the officers. Also these three officers do not represent all who are serving as police officers. Your use of "big" words does nothing to further your notions just simply shows what a buffoon you really are. And the next time you need to dial 911 for help put the phone down, you are not worthy of the assistance.

Bell got shot because he was hanging out with black thugs, one of whom stated that he was going to "yo, get my gun and kill that dumb white ***" (referring to a woman in a nightclub. Bell also tried to run over a police officer with his car.

>>ignoring the evidence and ruling in favor of an arrogant,

>>white supremacist, proto-fascist police state.

Wow, drinking the extra-strong Kool Aid today are we? This statement truly goes to show the irrational and paranoid mindset of the writer.

>>Where should we riot? What can we destroy? Who can we hurt?

Wow again! That is one of the ugliest things I've ever read on the web, and that includes all the trolls, morons and crazies. What sort of human reacts like that? Mr Hill, you need counseling to help you with your paranoia, rage, and violent tendencies.

And why were there no riots? Because officer Marc Cooper is very, very black. Exposes a little hypocrisy, on the part of the would-be rioters wouldn't you say? Sharpton was conflicted. He wanted to instigate, self-promote, and spew some hate at the Po-lice, but hit a brick wall because of that darn Marc Cooper.

There is only one solution. More black police officers.

So if you want to be constructive, you have to ask yourself seriously if your politics enables or disables that eventuality.

I'm saying that black police officers was what the Civil Rights Movement was fought for, and I think this every time I see firehoses and dogs.
