Last Night's Democratic Debate [Call]

Marc Lamont Hill
Melissa,

Is it me or was last night’s ABC debate the most ridiculous one yet? Flag pins? Jeremiah Wright? Bosnia? If I didn’t know better, I would have thought that the debate was moderated by Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter rather than Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolous.

Like me, many Americans turned on the debate expecting a respite from the stale political conversations that have been circulating since the Texas/Ohio primary. Instead of talking about substantive issues, however, the bulk of the debate time was spent rehashing the same foolishness that has fed the 24 hours cable news machine for the past five weeks.

Equally frustrating was the disproportionate amount of time spent challenging Barack Obama. It seemed as if the first 45 minutes of the debate were spent forcing him to explain (for the millionth time) his feelings about Jeremiah Wright and his “bitter” remarks about Pennsylvania voters. On the rare occasion when questions were asked of Hillary Clinton, they were in relation to Barack’s sore spots: “What did you mean, Senator Clinton, when you said that Jeremiah Wright wouldn’t have been your pastor?” While similar pile-ons have been committed against Clinton, like the NBC debate with Tim Russert and Brian Williams, such behavior is both unprofessional and unproductive.

Of course, Hillary Clinton took full advantage of the softballs being lobbed her way. In desperate need of a rhetorical knockout, Hillary dominated the debate by helping ABC’s dynamic duo press Obama on tabloid topics like his relationship with William Ayers, the former member Weather Underground member and current education professor at University of Illinois Chicago. Fortunately, Obama was able to shut that conversation down by pointing out that President Clinton pardoned two members of the Underground members during his presidency. Such moments were rare, however, as Obama seemed less focused, confident and, ahem, articulate than normal.

What did you think Melissa? Were you as annoyed by the debate as I was? Do you agree that your boy Barack got the three-way smackdown? Most importantly, what effect will the debate have on the upcoming primaries?

Last night's debate was definitely a disgrace but interestingly it serves to possibly reinforce what Senator Obama said when he suggested the reasons for bitterness among so-called "American" (which I always believe is code for white) voters is that various appeals to emotions, such as fear about scarcity of resources or the loss of 'privileges are used by those in positions of power to curry allegiance.  The questions from the moderator, with added dialogue from HIllary (invoking the name of Louis Farrakhan), were designed to paint a picture of Senator Obama as this shadowy, peer-pressure prone, un-American who is waiting to get in the White House so that he can pull a Mugabe redistribution of resources act.  It's said, but what we saw today is that there is still an attempt to quiet any African-American who would dare to have the audacity to believe in themselves and what they have to offer.

The fact that Sean Hannity on Hannity and Colmes last night was lauding profuse kudos to George Stephanopoulos and I CLEARLY knew that my mother was correct.  I always thought she was going overboard, until now.

She's been a longtime hater of lil' Georgie and I just had a general garden variety dislike for him, but my mother always called him the antichrist--and she's not the Bible-toting, scripture-quoting type holy roller. The fact that Hannity appreciated the questions directed at Obama confirms for me that lil Georgie is in fact the antichrist.

As an aside, am I the only one who's noticed that the FoxNews machine is trying to malign Obama because of he went to the Million Man March back in 2005?!?!?  I mean, wow!  I was only 11 at the time, but I thought it was a good thing, didn't know it was such a big problem for white America to have had that happen.

Maybe Fox News should be reminded of President Clinton's Speech concerning the Million Man March.  http://www.afn.org/~dks/race/clinton-e6.html. Then again I'd doubt if they cared to actually report anything other than innuendo.  I have a feeling that if Hillary doesn't get this nomination she is lining herself up to return to she and Bill's 'Republican' roots.  I don't think their scorched earth tactics are soley directed at Senator Obama.  I think they're sending a message to neoconservatives that they are 'on the way home'.  I would not be surprised if they were so bitter that they used the favor and endorsements they have established among far-right conservatives to justify them officially leaving the Democratic party.  After all a significant number of the legislations that were passed by the Clinton administration were actually more in line with conservatives than liberals (the Newt Gingrich crafted Republican Contract With America became the welfore reform policy; the so-called anti-crime bill that expanded the prison industrial complex; http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1282/is_n4_v49/ai_19208891.  Of course because the money was rolling and Bill ran around in 'Black Face' people became complacent.  Now their true colors are showing.  This is going to be very interesting.

I always assumed that George left the Clintons on bad terms and there was no love lost, but last night I had to give that assumption second thought.  He really threw her a line.  She was allowed to rattled on and on with her answers, etc.  She had a lot of leverage last night, thanks to the moderators.

I've written to ABC demnanding a rebate of the time I wasted watch their ate.

Nope! That wasn't a misspelling on my part there. It was an ate, since the first half was missing.

It doesn't matter if he got the three way smackdown.  HIllary's been getting it from day one.  it's his turn.  Everyone predicted that this would happen to Obama, except his own camp.   He really should brush his shoulders off and learn from Hill.  No one has gotten more beatdown by the white press, pundits, etc, than hillary.  And this beatdown began well before Obama came along.    He'll grow and learn from the experience. He's a smart guy, and bitterness doesn't become him at all.  Hope his supporters take heed and refrain from being bitter about his beating on national television.

DrewReason?

I think I understand why you gave yourself that sobriquet. For they certainly drew a line between you and rationality.
