Richardson Steps Up [call]

Marc Lamont Hill

Melissa,

On Friday, I received one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2008 political season. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, a close political ally of the Clintons, publicly endorsed Barack Obama. Although I’m not an Obama supporter (yes, I must write that every time we talk about him!), I am still excited about the endorsement. Why? Because it represents a rare moment of principled decision-making among mainstream politicians.

Unlike most politicians, whose endorsements are shaped by transparent careerism, Richardson made a choice against his own political self-interest. By most credible accounts, including ours, Richardson had the inside track on the VP spot on Hillary’s ticket. Although conventional wisdom suggests that he won’t secure such a position with Obama --I'm thinking Secretary of Homeland Security-- he nonetheless decided to endorse the candidate who he believes is a “once-in-a-lifetime” leader.

Even better than Richardson’s choice was his response to the Clinton-sponsored critics. When they pointed out that he owed the Clintons because Bill made him US Ambassador and Secretary of Energy, Richardon replied, “I paid him back. Because I served well.” When hired hitman James Carville compared Richardson to Judas Iscariot (what does that make Hillary? and Barack?) Richardson dismissed the Clinton's gutter politics and accurately pointed out that they “have a sense of entitlement to the presidency.” This is bold talk from a guy who spent much of primary season protecting Hillary from the competition.

So, Melissa, what do you think? Am I being naïve or is Richardson really doing something special here? Also, how significant is a Richardson endorsement at this point in the primary? Finally, doesn't he look a lot more Mexican now that he's not running for president?

Holla at ya boy!!!!!

This is intriguing - especially since Richardson has been successful at almost everything he's ever done.  His endorsement of Obama is noteworthy.

Hey Professor Hill (that's with a capital P), I saw you on MSNBC tonight and you did a fantastic job.  Supporting Obama that is. ;)  After this posting and a few more appearences like tonight's, and I may have to label you as a certified Obama supporter.  Welcome to the family.  We're happy to have you on our team.

Marc,

While Richardson's endorsement is noteworthy, the notion that it is a "rare moment of principled decision-making" and not careerism is a bit near-sighted. Richardson simply understands the math and realizes that Clinton will not win the nomination, So why not endorse the eventual nominee now and push to end this temper tantrum of entitlement politics which is destined to destroy the Democrats in the fall (and any chance of Richardson having a prominent position in national politics).

The motivation and timing of Richardson speech was what hit me the most.  Obama was in a political freefall after the post-Gerri Ferraro media assault for association with Rev. Wright.  Richardson claimed he was moved by the speech Obama gave last Tuesday and he acknowledged the true character and leadership ability of Obama.  How often does someone break camp to support a foe when they are at their weakest?

He knew that this endorsement would have lasting backlash from his Mexican-American supporters and prior Democratic allies and Carville was the first to launch the expected sortie by calling him Judas (does that make Bill and Hillary Jesus in some Bizarro truth challenged universe?).  This is demonstrative of the unifying character of Obama.

Marc you may not be an Obama supporter, but I know that you understand that game recognizes game.  If you can point to another political figure during our lifetime (past 40 years) who has had the ability to turn enemies into allies, I am all for it.  This endorsement represents everything about change that the Obama campaign stands for: individual responsibility, intelligent judgment, collaboration amongst varied factions, and an ability to reconcile with those that we previously opposed to work for the greater good.  It was poignant in its symbolism, and even moreso telling of what the future may hold from bold steps taken by our chosen representatives.

My comment exactly except I added, "and he looks fine."  LOL

lol, Mike, yes, Richardson does look a lot more ethnic.  And a lot more attractive too.

It's too bad that Richardson thinks that Obama is a "once in a lifetime lifetime" leader.  I certainly hope not.  And I hope  Barack Obama doesn't think that about himself either.

Marc,

I have no idea why you are not an obama supporter.  i have a theory on why some blacks refuse to support him.  I think it's just that it's hard for them to release their long held embrace with white power.  and don't tell me about being a professor of black studies, my own uncle, a celebrated black writer and a one-time black nationalist is indeed married to a white woman so i know well the conflict herein.  i support interracial relationships - they bother me not at all, but i've always thought it strange when a person of one race would only date people of another race.  how can you be a black nationalist that will only date white women?  seems strange to me but perhaps you could make sense of it.

maybe you consider yourself to be a stand out by finding reasons not to support.  but one things for certain, when looking at obamas' record, listening to him speak we all mostly have agreed  that he's the candidate that speaks mostly to us - those of us blacks that have been able to free ourselves of our deep, deep, secret fear of one amongst us getting out and succeeding.  Which brings me to my other belief.  i believe that for many of my super successful black male friends that don't support obama - one reason could be that they feel their own power will be usurped - that they will no longer stand out as tall because they will be less special.  i mean will a black asst. professor of  urban studies lose some of his relevancy once the nation is run by a more powerful, potentially more intelligent black man that the whole country has its' eyes on.  I think that's some of the secret fear.  sort of like being the cutest hottest female in your family and then having beyonce become a family member.  i'm a cute girl and i tellya, this would give me pause.

finally, the richardson endorsement follows  a trend of most learned people.  Those of us that are not swayed by the media and aren't easily taken in by catchy soundbites can see right through clintons disgusting tactics to a chance at having a real candidate to lead our country.  what intelligent person would not have been swayed by baracks manly discourse on race. he's inspiring the best in all of us.  That's the main point for his candidacy  he inspires the best in all of us - which, I think you have underhandedly acknowledged in your column.

soldier on.
