SEEKING PEACE AND CLARITY during a CRAZED WEEKEND

Keith Josef Adkins

I was going to post something about Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his Canadian escapade, then I got bored with that idea and thought, hey, I should post something about global warming and how it feels like late Autumn in the dead of summer. Then I was going to blog about the legacy of Alvin Ailey and his theater's 50th Anniversary and how his younger Alvin Ailey II is still primal, visceral, daring, black, brown and continuing to prove how amazing the human body, or... that I have relatives visiting from Cincinnati who insist I guide them through a child-friendly New York City. What?!?

I decided to say this: it's the weekend. I'm simply chilling. Here's my plan and I suggest you do the same.

1. Get 8 hours of sleep Friday and Saturday night.

2. Eat dinners that consist of a poultry or fish and a leafy green. AND NO DESSERTS.

3. Drink only water.

4. Catch a flick that doesn't push gratuitous violence, misogyny, anti-Other, pro-military America. I hear the animated Wall/E's pretty good. And if you want to go way back... COOLEY HIGH or BLACK ORPHEUS [great rentals].

5. Go to a museum, or a park, or a street fair. Get some fresh air.

6. Call my brother and wish him Happy Birthday and that I love him like Crazy.

7. Tell all of my folks in Los Angeles to check out the American Black Film Festival. My boy Rashaad Ernesto Green has an amazing short film being screened. It's called PREMATURE and it boldly explores teenage parenthood. It's all the BUZZ.

8. Discover a new music spot and food spot.

9. Get a massage. Deep tissue, baby!

10. Be good to myself.

Have a great weekend!

I love it... I have something that reads like this posted on my bathroom mirror. I read it (and, of course, try to live by it) daily.

Have a fabulous weekend!

Man I have Black Orpheus on my netflix list and I just wasn't sure about that one, but since you say it is good I may move it up in the queue.  :)

Last weekend I made a list that read kind of like yours. Being the person that I am, I felt the need to "check" things of my list. So, I stole away to a plush hotel, slept 8 (plus) hours each night, decided to have dessert each day, went for two early morning walks, and had a deep tissue massage at the Red Door spa that was so good I wanted to propose to my massage therapist. I felt so good it didn't matter what I didn't get done. I was totally good to me!

Better yet--- just have a good time with the short human relatives.

Kids are more honest, more fun than adults.   They also get you out of yourself in no time flat.

...Be good to yourself.

Great advise, Keith, but what's wrong with a little dessert? As long as you don't over do it and keep the portions small, all is good.

So Keith, how's it feel to actually be a "racist"?
