Michelle Obama with an Angela Davis Fro: Now that's Crazy

Keith Josef Adkins

It was bad enough I had to relinquish my morning swims in L.A. and return to an overheated apartment in Brooklyn where bills were amok.  But to make matters worse I read a Facebook update from the writer Toure claiming the New Yorker was depicting Obama in Muslim attire and Michelle in Angela Davis' revolutionary fro and toting an oozie and oh yeh, I had to do some snooping.

Toure was right.  The New Yorker's July 21 issue dons a sandal-wearing Obama and a camouflage-angry Michelle fist-bumping under the watchful gaze of Osama Bin Ladin while an American flag burns in the fireplace.   The cover is strangely titled the Politics of Fear.  The New Yorker has already released a statement that admits the Obama depiction is tasteless, but their defense is the New Yorker is a satirical magazine.  They prefer tastelessness.  Which is fine.  I love satire and hey, the Obamas are fair game.  Right?

But what's more interesting is this license many liberal folks are taking lately.  The Obamas appear to be prime pickings for lefty intellectuals to go the extra mile when it comes to addressing the fear of the so-called straw chewing, bible-friendly media.  From Yazmany Arboleda's The Assassination of Obama exhibition [depicting a forty inch black penis] to this, lefties are working overtime trying to show us how horrible the media has been to the Obamas.  And yes, political figures have been depicted in much scarier ways, but it's usually done to exploit the obvious crazy of those folks [i.e. Falwell, Bush, Reagon, Madonna], however, this newer attempt by liberals to express their glorious liberalism borderlines on cockiness.  With all their harmless claims, it feels a bit like they're having more fun seeing how far they can push the button than being responsible in their so-called social commentary.

Obama in Muslim attire is fine.  There's nothing wrong with worshipping Allah and taking the trek to Mecca [one of my great friends is a Muslim], but to associate Obama as a Muslim honoring Bin Ladin is old news.  There's nothing wrong with Angela Davis and her fro either.  I know Angela and I have rested my head in her home in the Hills a few times, and yes she donned a fro back the day, but never has she worn military gear [she was NOT a Black Panther], and in most enlightened circles Angela represents female-empowerment, the love of music and the outdoors, and hightened social consciousness.

I guess my bigger point is most of the converted [those who read The New Yorker] are well aware of the media's attempt to demonize, racialize, and un-Americanize the Obamas.  That's why the depiction feels cocky and self-congratulatory. The New Yorker is basically preaching to the choir.  Now if they depicted Obama in some meditative prayer and Michelle hiking through Mendocino and listening to Bessie Smith, well, that would have been some good satire.

Politics of Fear, my foot.  More like, Politics of Gloating Self-Righteousness.

its just giving fox news more ammo, for shame!

The New Yorker had ample opportunity to satirize members of other ethnic and religious groups. Ed Koch donned an Afro wig, but that was okay because he was a character, right? Comedian Jackie Mason called Mayor Dinkins "a fancy schvartze with a mustache," but that was also excused. (He has since made a petty anti-Obama video targeted at elderly Jews like himself that plays on fears.)I don't recall seeing Mayor Giuliani satirized as a Soprano in a pinstriped suit, chomping on a cigar, and clutching a violin case. Sasha Baron Cohen lampoons American narrow-mindedness, but his "running of the Jews" wasn't considered worthy of a magazine cover. I'm all for satire, but I have to ask: Why is this couple ripe for attack, especially when others equally deserving have been off limits? Where are the *** satires, the Jewish ones, those lampooning the right wing's personalities (Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity, Michael Savage, etc.?) NYC has had years of controversy regarding the inclusion of gay marcher under their own banner at the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Somehow, that never once merited a satirical article with cover art.

What gives? I see a definite double standard.

Why was the word Q-U-E-E-R censored? I didn't type 3 stars...

The New Yorker released a public statement saying that its cover is tasteless?  Come on, be fair.  Here's a snippet of editor David Remnick's explanation in HuffPo: "What I think [the cover] does is hold up a mirror to the prejudice and dark imaginings about Barack Obama's — both Obamas' — past, and their politics. I can't speak for anyone else's interpretations, all I can say is that it combines a number of images that have been propagated, not by everyone on the right but by some, about Obama's supposed "lack of patriotism" or his being "soft on terrorism" or the idiotic notion that somehow Michelle Obama is the second coming of the Weathermen or most violent Black Panthers. That somehow all this is going to come to the Oval Office."

This post seems like an opportunity to unleash a longstanding gripe against the elite left.  It skirts the point that we need to talk about (and which the cover makes): regular Americans, who need no help from the media, perceive the Obama's exactly as they've been depicted.  That's a worthier discussion than whether the left is self-congratulatory or gloating.  Who cares if they are or not?

Also, there is something wrong with continually saying Barack Obama is a Muslim.  He's not.  And it's not a rebuke of Islam for people to say what he is.

Crazy picture and ridiculous excuses from the New Yorker...

Any fool would know that Black folks have been understanding satire for years (eg Jesse B. Semple by Langston Hughes, any black comedican and playing the dozens).

We also know minstrel show when we see it.

I think this cover will command some bucks in the future for those afficianodos of Jockey Statures, Aunt Jemima cookie jars, Little Black Sambo dolls and mammy aprons.

Just a nappy headed sister who would like folks to realize that naps and fros are not an insult but somethin' to be proud of.

I couldn't agree more.  Well said.

Snapdiva,

I have to agree. Well said, you get three snaps on that.

Dang it,

I was writing so fast that I misspelled comedian, afficianados and statues...

That tends to happen when this sistah wakes up early to foolishness in Cyberspace.

Bought the New Yorker issue- plan to read it later tonight.

I'm thinking of several satires of the cover.

Been snappin' all over folks in my "Mayberry" like burg who are saying those black folks are just overreacting or this is 2008 does racism still exist.

Whatever...

Ok, hopefully I don't catch toooo much hell for asking this...but has anyone actually read The New Yorker article? I haven't yet, but plan to read it on their website soon only because I'm locked in a (futile?) battle to stop giving away most of my hard-earned cash each month to all these white folks who are after it ALL the time.

But if I may put forth this much right now, can we give the folks at that stuffy publication a pass on this one? However lame, it was an attempt at satire, which next to stand up comedy is about the toughest thang to pull off, particularly amongst the masses. If anythang, I say it proves that these folks aren't as elite in the skills department as everyone else seems to claim they are!

And if by "elite" people actually mean "moneyed"...well then we all know money doesn't make anybody else mo' better than the next person...just mo' monetarily comfortable, perhaps. Let's not begrudge others their cash, ill-gotten or not...and let's face it, unless you're a rich native inhabitant of this continent (read: Indian)...it's ALL ill-gotten.

Obama's ascendancy to the American throne won't change that. And once he gets there, believe me, this caricature will seem tame by the time all is said and done. There are some vicious folk out there folks, especially in the lamestream media. And Obama, of all people, should know this. I'm glad to see the brother step up and speak his piece (or peace), but all thangs considered, the brother's gonna be jus' fine. Jah willing.

What matters mo' is that the rest of us  have got to figure out a way to get ours (preferably working together) and keep it, while we help Obama get his. Make sense? Hope so.

The blackwhole blog reads  like a white boy trying to be hip.... smellin' skunk and it ain't pretty-- better to stay on point.

Why the satire of erroneous fodder? Why not the satire of ironic matter that The Obamas are actually more American than they are painted to not be?

Too much legitimacy of patriotism is given to fundamental conservative alignment when just as much American sentiment is lodged in American Liberalism in which The Obamas are members of. Those same people that are fighting to defend them is what they are most closest too in membership while we are offended that everyone is getting it wrong. They are bourgie. They don't want to hurt anyone. They want to get ahead and see others who are mere citizens struggling to attain THE AMERICAN DREAM an opportunity. They are do-gooders. Terrorists? How is this concoction of fears in lies surviving?

Really? As much as most people think that Blacks are atypical stereotypes, I am baffled at how completely marginalized African-American Elites are an anomaly to Whites. African-American Elites seem to be everywhere I turn in Washington yet they seem to be an urban myth to Conservative's needing to not consider that group a real and expanding group with ideologies cemented in making American Virtue stand up to itself.

The only satire of The Obamas that would send moniker making accuracy in humor is how elitist and bourgeious they are wanting to save the world while not losing themselves in the company they kept of those that had the power and connects to broker them to the place they are: those same liberal elites that did this stupid thing and will continue to, as you nail on the head --- self-righteously.

Elites are just so excited they are getting a chance to try out all of their ideas that they forget that The Obamas are Black and they are still and will always be different as all Blacks are in that by default they need to be handled with care even by those crazy about them.

The NY'er has always had satirical covers...do research and find a few!!!  Some folks with limited insight probably thought of that imagery long before the NY'er article.  Just some more trivial attention grabbers and its just July, folks!  ROFLMBAO!!!

I think the overall point, snapdiva, is that The New Yorker cover in question is hardly worth anybody's time or energy (the post above this one states the case mo' succintly than me), but look at all the commentary it has generated here and elsewhere. For this reason alone, I appreciate the fact that theblackwhole's blog hasn't even mentioned it [n' won't...b'cuz it'z mine].

If we, whether indivually or as a people, get caught up in every little thang white folks or anybody else has to say about us (or Barack and his family), then we've already lost ourselves and can hardly keep blaming anyone else for the current state of the Black community overall.

We should dump the "blame game" altogether, anyways, if you ask me [n' I recognize that u didn't].

Underneath all his "preachifyin'", however, I believe this is what Obama is trying to get at with these continuous speeches on personal responsibility in our community. Yeah, other folks (meaning communities other than Black folks--not just whites) need to step up their own personal resposibility, too...but we already know that.

And just so I don't come across as totally hypocritical, I have read the article just to see if these cats at TNY were smarter on the inside than they were on the cover, which I have nothing against in the grand scheme of things. As it turns out, the article is typical of their style; informative but hardly revelatory. All of which will play well to their audience. It'll actually benefit Obama in the end. Nevertheless, I immediately saw what they were going for on the cover, but, as satire, their visual take was just too easy for my tastes. And satire, as I stated in the previous post, is anything but easy.

The same thing can easily be said about whatever I write in my blog--n' it won't stop me, either.

But I'm fully aware that my time would be better spent reading up and taking action on how to get ahead economically than it would be spending any of it on this kind of nonsense. And by the time Barack takes office (Jah willing), I plan to turn my time and energy around in just this manner. Pretty soon, I will totally abandon following, listening to, or paying for any of this garbage, whether it's from white folks, any other group, or even us.

P.S. What have ya got against theblackwhole'z take on the political n' social spectrum? Duz ev'ry brotha hafta listen ta gospel music only, pray to Sir Bill Cosby, take a white god az hiz personal savior (even tho' it'z all part a' The Big Lie), n' date or marry 1 a' the sistaz only ta be Black in yer book? If so...how sad.

Or iz it b'cuz I'm obviously totally unconcerned 'bout usin'  "b****" or otha profanity @ will in it? [...n' I censored myself here only b'cuz I'm writin' on someone else's site where the tone n' context iz entirely different.]

Whenever white folks and white liberals advise me to stop being so sensitive and get over being Black I do a couple of things.

1; If the liberal is a white jew I remind him not to lecture to me about how to get over over  the domestic holocaust on this soil and kiss my ass..

2. If the person is a white liberal I remind them I  alone reserve the right to define how I wish to react to attacks on my personhood not another and kiss my ass..

3. If the person is a Black I tell them to call my grandmother up and tell her to get over it and kiss my ass..

4. if the person is another enthic person I remind them I am still waiting for thier graditude since they have piggyback on Blacks who created cviil rights in this country and I also tell them to kiss my ass..

All of the rest I just repeat the above in different dialect..

ha! the pot calling the kettle black! "self righteous"?  who's the one judging the book by its cover? clearly the author, nor anyone commenting about the author's commentary, forgot to read any of the articles in this issue. the use of satire in this  new yorker was more precise than i've seen in awhile.

the immense irony of this issue takes to an even greater scale than that of the magazine cover and contents itself. let's just say this issue has been selling out in areas that wouldn't think of voting for obama and its these people that are part of the joke. playing on the silly stereotypes of the obama's  has allured 1st time new yorker readers into discovering the opposite of what is portrayed on the magazine cover, while extinguishing their own 'anti barak' camp fire pow-wows. both ryan lizza's compelling 15 page article on how chicago shaped obama's politics, as well as hendrik hertzberg's insightful commentary  titled "flip flop flap", do this clearly.

try "digging deeper" and finding out for yourself, just like the thousands of republicans that got duped into buying this issue.

by the way... to the author's credit, the comment on michelle obama hiking through mendicino county, bumping bessie smith, was damn funny.

If Michelle and Barack were looking in a mirror horrified at their reflection (insert NYer cover) with O'Reilly behind the mirror holding it up with a receipt invoice hanging out of his pocket that read something like "trick mirror" purchased by Fox News or something like that, than that would be Satire.

"Now if they depicted Obama in some meditative prayer and Michelle hiking through Mendocino and listening to Bessie Smith, well, that would have been some good satire."

LOL!!!!

I think cover is a clear and utter exmple of the racists double standard that we as black people have to endure everyday in this country.

There will never be a Essence Magazine cartoon cover of John McCain putting on a KKK uniform hi-5ing Bush. While his wife sits in the background sniffing a line of coke, with money from Tax breaks and Oil industry payoffs lying around, including a pic of Hitler in background. Thatll never happen.

So when all these racist bad situations happen, your stuck like adeer in headlights because you cant do nothing, If you say something your over reacting, so we just have to subtle and be idle to the constant taunting and mocking of us still being the NI. GG. ERS they brought over here from Africa today in 2008 and in the future.

Whatever, you believe that if you want to but its not a joke, by any means.

Posted By: dr spaceman (July 17, 2008 at 3:51 PM)

Sojourner: Thank you for saying it plainly. The problem with the NY'er cover is that it is missing the main ingredient of a successfully satirical political cartoon: THE SATIRE.

Some of ya'll on here using 200 words to defend the NY'er by narrating it's history of doing satirical covers, as if the rest of us don't know that, when YOU ARE THE ONES who don't seem to understand why THIS COVER is outside of that tradtion: the cartoon is, by definition, not yet satirical. Dummies. That is called irony, btw.
