Barack and Michelle: A Tyler Perry Project

Keith Josef Adkins

I'm a little late in the game with this.  So forgive me.  But according to THE Tyler Perry he's been inspired to write a love story about Barack and Michelle Obama. That's right.  The possible future president and his first lady may find themselves on the silver screen—courtesy of Hollywood's new powerhouse.  Allegedly after having dinner with the Obamas Perry was struck with inspiration:  a movie about a man's love for his woman with a political twist tentatively titled For the Love of You.

Now I'm not sharing any criticism here.  I know I've been blasting Perry for his, in my opinion, subpar depictions of black life, but I promised I wouldn't do that anymore.  And I won't.  Whatever I feel about Perry's narratives I will forever be in awe of his ability to carve out a niche in the ego-heavy, thin-skinned, and at times, adolescent psychology of Hollywood.  And, no, my editor didn't force me to write that.

But the question remains:  are we ready for a romantic Barack?  I certainly understand Perry's impulse to create a leading man type out of the Democratic Hopeful.  During the Primaries, Barack's been called a rock star and a messiah.  And he certainly fits the physical bill of Perry's inclination toward the tall, knight-in-shining armors of his films.  You know, Shemar Moore, Boris Kodjoe, Rick Fox.  The only difference is that Barack isn't acting.

Then there's Perry's continuous meditation on the damaged albeit no-nonsense damsel in distress who, as you know, must always learn at the end of the day not to throw every black man into the "useless crap" pile.  Now Michelle certainly appears non-nonsense much like Perry's favorites Angela Bassett, Gabrielle Union and Kimberly Elise.  But there's nothing about the Ivy-educated, self-made wife of a politician that appears to be in distress.  In fact, during yesterday's GMA interview Michelle was sticking to her guns about a promise she and Barack made to their daughters about getting a dog.  Barack was skeptical; Michelle doused the skepticism without a blink.  Yeh, Perry may need to dumb-down his Michelle character to convince us she needs any type of life-raft.

I wasn't able to confirm with Perry's publicist if For the Love of You was officially a based-upon project or an Obama-approved venture, but it does appear Perry's quite serious.  According to Black Enterprise, he wants to cast Denzel Washington and Angela Bassett as his leads and be in production later this year.

For me, I'd like to see the Obamas get down and dirty with our economy, demand American citizens to pay closer attention to the world, and stress personal activism in order to create political change for all.  You know, before I see any likes of them smooching and loving on the silver screen.  But that's just me.  Romantic flicks have never tickled my interest.

Tyler,

Please don't.

Oh no! Now, I watch Tyler's movies (although the last one was enough to make me quit) but seriously? This man has no respect for his craft, and he is trying to drag Barack down into his foolishness.  Can we pay someone in Atlanta to sabotage this effort?

I agree with everybody who has posted so far.  First Reverend Wright, then this.  If it ain't Hillary, it's your "own people", and I use that loosely.

Also, not enough time has gone by.  When Barrack has served as president and made that "change" he's promised, and if you get ANBODY (Malcolm Lee, Antoine Fuqua, hell, Tim Burton)  BUT TYLER PERRY to do this, maybe then this will be worth seriously considering.

This idea is great. Despite what folks may say about Tyler Perry, I thank God for him everyday.  He has been tasked with providing a mirror of some folks everyday life.  By doing so he has help a number of folks around the world a lot of them I know personally.  I think he's talented and very creative.  Once this movie hits the theatre he can count on me as well as the other million or so fans he has.  Some of his movies, writings, shows, plays are better than others, but the point is they all were successful to someone.  As long as you make a difference to someone, that's all that matters.   We as people, despite our race need to build and encourage one another.  If you think you can do a better job or have a better solution step out on your FAITH and make it HAPPEN!

Be Encouraged!

This has to be a joke, Mr. Perry needs to spend less time trying to make a quick dime and remember that black people don't have the luxury or exploiting ourselves......thanks for the heads up'......I would have had a heart attack if I saw a preview for the film with no prior warning.

I totally agree with fellow poster "Be On It" on this one.  I've enjoyed Tyler's plays and admire his creativity in bringing humor and a message through Madea.

I have however been totally disappointed with his movies.  I wholeheartedly agree when Be On It says, the man has no respect for his craft.  We need a serious film maker to tackle this subject as well as the passage of time before anyone attempts it.  Now is not the time and TP is not the man (at least not on the basis of his movie making thus far). Tyler is clearly making money, but in the entertainment industry making money is not necessarily synonymous with producing quality work.

I can't stand Tyler Perry.  I can't stand his artistic style - it has no substance.  As for Barack and Michelle......please somebody confirm that this is not true.

god save us from more of tyler perry's mawkish, shallow depictions of, well, anything!

Spike... Spike... save us Spike... George C. Wolfe -- ANYBODY -- Lord, talke to this confused young man! We do not need a Lifetime/BET/E News biopic on the OBamas right now. Is he crazy?

"Boy ain't got sense god gave a peanut!"

I think this is the greatest act of self-promotion Tyler Perry has done as of yet. He sees the huge level of support Perry has among a large portion of African Americans. He then announces he will write a romantic film based on the Obamas romance and relationship. He even gives us a working title. Now, whether on not Senator Obama wins the Presidency, and the film ACTUALLY IS about the Obamas, he has solidified a huge first weekend box office returns just by dropping these few details in the media and having them repeated in the media. I have said it before, Perry's real skill is in promotion and marketing and NOT in artistic ability. He is a hack as a writer and a clown as an actor. God is not his co-pilot, Madison Avenue is.

Oh for heaven's sake, I wish y'all would stop acting so white, so high-toned AKA, like your stuff don't stink.  Whether you like slapstick or not, presidents and their families are always fair game for satire and comedies.  And whatever Tyler Perry is, he is a man who knows his audience.  He knows what will sell and what won't .  Black folks are not going to tolerate any pure ignorance about Obama, but they can and will be able to laugh at him like white folks laugh at their Presidents on white folks' shows Saturday Night Live, Jay Leno, and David Letterman.  Y'all need a sense of humor pill.
