I have to admit two things. One, after a full week at the movies I finally saw the box office bang Iron Man. Two, besides Spiderman and those radical mutants deemed The X-Men, Marvel Comics was as interesting to me as canned spinach. What I'm trying to say is I certainly was aware Tony Starks existed, but I had no idea of his socially-sensitive lefty super-skills. Hell, I didn't even know he had heart problems.
But not only is Iron Man a socially-conscious superhero, he's also quite timely. I mean honestly, how welcoming is an obnoxious, womanizing, weapon-making capitalist who... think about this... after a near-fatal trip to the Middle East where the weapons he's engineered himself are murdering millions he's kidnapped. But that's not all. Then after three months in captivity he escapes the clutches of a group of American-sponsored evil terrorists and returns to America to do what? Dispose of all his company's vicious weapons and devote his life to protecting the world from the very people who his weapons have empowered. I mean, Obama couldn't have prayed for a better endorser. And for me, I was seriously impressed.
Now I'm already an Obama convertee, but for the hundred or so moviegoers last night at the AMC who may have been on the fence, well... let's hope seeing Tony Starks morph from playboy genius evil-maker to peacemaking Iron Man in order to shut down global weapon-mongers will change their lives forever.
Oh, one last thing: with Iron Man's example, you can dedicate your life to world peace and anti-weaponry and still drive the new Audi R8 and live in a glass house in Malibu. Man, I want the life of a lefty superhero.
